Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar Opens New Sports Facilities

On 28 September 2026, Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar officially opened its new Sports Facilities, adding new sports and recreational spaces on campus for students, university employees, sports clubs, organizations, teams, and citizens of Mostar.

Representatives of Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar, the Federal Ministry of Displaced Persons and Refugees, the Government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, the City of Mostar, the academic community, and sports organizations attended the opening ceremony, together with students, university partners, and guests.

The Sports Facilities include a football pitch, an athletics track, a long jump runway and pit, padel courts, mini-golf courses, a grandstand, and supporting facilities. The project has improved the conditions for sports activities and created additional opportunities to organize various sporting events and competitions on the university campus.

Prof. Dr. Alena Huseinbegovic, Rector of Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar, addressed the attendees and highlighted the importance of the Sports Facilities for developing sports activities, improving student life, and strengthening the University's connection with the wider community. She noted that the University implemented the project in two phases to create a functional and well-equipped space for sports and recreational activities.

According to the Rector, sports organizations already use the Sports Facilities. At the time of the opening, sports activities at the University involved around 500 children and young athletes. In contrast, more than 1,000 young people participated in training programmes organized by sports organizations that use the University's infrastructure. To mark the opening, the University offered its partner sports organizations free use of the Sports Facilities throughout October during their regular training sessions.

The Federal Ministry of Displaced Persons and Refugees supported the implementation of the project. The Government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, through the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, and the City of Mostar also contributed to the project's implementation.

With the opening of the Sports Facilities, Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar has expanded its sports and recreational offer on campus, providing additional opportunities for students, employees, sports organizations, and the citizens of Mostar.

The opening ceremony concluded with an exhibition football match between the pre-pioneer teams of FK Velez and the Fortuna Universal Sports School, followed by a reception for guests and attendees.
