Public Forum Held on 'High School Students' Eating Habits'

On March 21, 2025, the Agro-Mediterranean Faculty at Džemal Bijedić University of Mostar hosted a public forum titled "High School Students' Eating Habits." The event brought together high school students, professors, nutrition and health experts, and an interested audience. The panel featured one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most renowned nutritionists, Amela Ivković O'Reilly, along with students from the "Nutrition" study program: Adela Dizdarević, a medical doctor, as well as Tajra Delić and Edina Berberović.

The forum aimed to identify key challenges high school students face regarding nutrition and provide guidance and recommendations for healthier eating habits. This initiative has become a tradition, following the success of last year's public discussion and the presentation of research findings on university students' dietary habits.

Event organizers emphasized the importance of raising awareness about proper nutrition among young people and fostering dialogue about healthy eating habits.

During the forum, experts presented the findings of a study conducted in collaboration with local high schools. The research revealed that many students prefer fast food and sugary drinks while often neglecting healthier options. Nutrition specialists highlighted the significance of proper dietary education and its impact on both health and academic performance.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage in a panel discussion with a nutritionist and a medical doctor, who shared practical advice on how to adopt healthy eating habits. The forum also provided valuable insights into choosing the right dietary options for maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

"We are delighted with the turnout and engagement of all participants, especially our students. Through initiatives like this, we aim to encourage young people to reflect on their eating habits and recognize the importance of healthy nutrition," stated Professor Dr. Alisa Hadžiabulić, Dean of the Agro-Mediterranean Faculty, on behalf of the event organizers.

The organizers also expressed gratitude to the high schools that participated in the research: Mostar High School of Medicine, JU High School of Polytechnic Mostar, EUT High School (Economy and Tourism) Mostar, Second Gymnasium Mostar, Gymnasium Mostar, High School of Construction Mostar, Mixed High School Bugojno, and JU High School Jablanica. Their support and cooperation made it possible to collect essential data, contributing to a better understanding of young people's dietary habits and the development of strategies for improving their health.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the students played a crucial role in this research. Their honesty and willingness to participate significantly enriched the study. The organizers thanked them for recognizing the importance of this topic and for collaborating on efforts to enhance high school students' nutrition.

The "High School Students' Eating Habits" forum is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving youth health within the community. The Agro-Mediterranean Faculty plans to continue organizing similar activities, promoting education on healthy lifestyles, and raising awareness about the importance of producing safe and nutritious local food.
