Agro-Mediterranean Faculty Joins Bitter Melon Research Project

Professors of the Agro-Mediterranean Faculty, Asst. Prof. Dr. Aleksandra Supljeglav Jukic, Asst. Prof. Sr. Jasna Hasanbegović Sejfic and Prof. Dr. Jasmina Aliman are participating in a pioneering project that studies bitter melon in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Within the project ‘Phytochemical Profile of the Momordica charantia Plant’, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science, the Agro-Mediterranean Faculty continues to research bitter melon cultivated on experimental plots in Bihac and Mostar.

The project team collaborates with professors from BURCH University, the University of Banja Luka, and Dzemal Bijedic University of Mostar, further strengthening the project’s capacity and its multidisciplinary research approach.

In the coming period, the team will focus on identifying the phenolic–flavonoid profile and examining the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, anti-obesity, and antilipogenic properties of bitter melon extracts. The researchers expect that the results will contribute to developing a new natural dietary supplement and confirm that bitter melon grown in Bosnia and Herzegovina can be successfully used in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
