IRO UNMO BLOG: International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Every year, on February 11, the world celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This special day reminds us that women and girls play an important role in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It also encourages young girls to follow their dreams in science and research.

Why is this day important?

For many years, fewer women than men worked in science. Many people believed that science was only for men. But this is not true! Women have made amazing discoveries in medicine, physics, biology, and many other fields. Today, more and more women work in science, but we still need to support them.

How can we support women in science?

  1. Encourage young girls – Teachers and parents can inspire girls to study science. They can show them books, videos, and real stories of successful women scientists.

  2. Give equal opportunities – Schools and universities should give the same chances to boys and girls. They should support women with scholarships and research programs.

  3. Celebrate women in science – We should talk about great women scientists and their work. Many people know about Albert Einstein, but do they know about Marie Curie or Rosalind Franklin? We need to share their stories!
